The opportunity to attend the national CNBAM convention in Texas and connect with a variety of students from around the world was absolutely extraordinary! Plus the 80 degree weather and sunshine was definitely a perk. Here are a few tips and inspiration I gathered from the break-out sessions and roundtables.
First off, every session I attended provided effective and relevant information for the evolving world of advertising and newspaper. Since the distribution of newspapers on college campuses is a difficult task it's important to find a good balance between print, web, and social media engagement. The first keynote speaker, Michael Hoffman kicked off the opening ceremony with an energetic vibe and enthuisactic presentation on becoming the "master of the tornado" aka master of your life. When the tornado rises in your life, your skill set must rise above to beat it. People need to become a person of influence and action; Learn. Adapt. Apply.
One of my favorite outbreak sessions was 'Integrated Communications, Marketing, and Events Promotion' presented by the an advisor from California Polytechnic State University. The information that was presented not only touched on basic elements of unique designs when it comes to advertisement but also how to integrate all levels of media through marketing, advertising, and public relations. Learn to think hard about the impact, have an organized proposal, establish a creative direction and implement through social media.
Do you know how many characters is in a tweet? If so, how many times have you reached exactly 140 characters in a tweet? According to a social media session I attended, the "perfect tweet" is 95 characters long. This gives users enough space to retweet and provide a message back, also leaves space for an image which is 23 characters. How you frame your tweet within those 140 characters is important as to how much to audience will read and remember within a few seconds of scrolling through their news feed.
Saturday night CMBAM recognized 145 winners from 46 different schools, the Grand Valley Lanthorn newspaper received 4th place in Best Newspaper Promotion Multimedia Campaign, our advisor Angela couldn't be more ecstatic! Through this convention, our ad staff connected and collaborated with students from around the world and gathered strategies and tactics to take back to the office. I meet so many talented and inspired students from around the US, I hope to stay connected and share ideas with them in years to come. From this convention, I learned its important to surround yourself with positive people if you hope for positive outcomes. The newspaper not only brings the campus and community together buts it brings together a family and I couldn't be more blessed to be a part of this family at Grand Valley.
Aside from attending breakout sessions and roundtables all day, the Lanthorn staff had an afternoon of exploring the city of Austin! #KeepAustinWeird
