My first year at Grand Valley I was bombarded with an endless list of clubs, sports, sororities and organizations I could join - I just wasn't quite sure where I fit in among the college crowd, until I discovered Grand Valley Dance Troupe were I was able to share my passion for dance with an amazing group of people who I can now call my family.
Dance has been a HUGE part of my life ever since I was able to walk so keeping it apart of my life was truly important to me. Dance became a sense of relief and communication of movement without ever having to speak. After a long day of school and work, a night in the dance studio was my way of clearing and detoxing my mind and body. After doing competitive dance for 12 years, entering the world of Dance Troupe was a breath of fresh air. It didn't matter how much dance background you had, how high you could kick your leg or how many pirouettes you could do, if you came with a positive attitude and smile on your face, you were headed in the right direction. This is what I love about this group of girls and Jon. (One of the first male dancers to enter Dance Troupe)
I have been a part of Dance Troupe for four semesters now and grew closer and closer to people I can count on for absolutely anything, they have seen me at my ultimate high and lows throughout the year but their endless love and support is what pushes me above and beyond. I can't say enough how blessed I am to have been apart of this organization, continue my love for dance, and build relationships that will last a lifetime.
This past semester I took upon the opportunity to choreograph a dance for a group of dancers. The entire organization is student ran, therefore all the dances are created by full time working college students, it's amazing how they seamlessly pull off beautiful dances. I had the chance to work with 32 girls this semester creating a contemporary modern piece. I was extremely nervous stepping into a large commitment but seeing my dancers faces every Sunday evening with eager eyes to learn and dance was enough inspiration in itself to keep going. I couldn't thank them enough for all the hardwork and dedication they put into making the dance the absolute best it could be.
I could go through all of the people in Dance Troupe and share a special moment I have spent with them, although this blog post would become a mile long. Therefore I just want to say thank you to each and everyone of the people who I have came in contact with over the last 2 years. The dances I have been a part of have allowed me to connect with people on a deeper level than simply clean cut turns and pointed toes. Those elements will naturally fall into place but the emotion and drive each of these dancers holds behind every dance is extraordinary and I wouldn't change this experience for the world. Thanks to all of my Dance Troupe family for the opportunity to learn, love, and grow my passion of dance. #GVDTlove
