The first week in June at the golf course I had a conversation with a league member about school and discovering a career in life. I mentioned my major, current jobs and how I completed over 60 hours of working among the few jobs I have this summer. He proceed to say I was nuts yet very dedicated and driven to achieve my goals. Although working at the golf course isn't my ideal dream job it's an energetic and enjoyable position that is providing me with the ability to support myself while living on my own this summer.
So here I am working three jobs, yes three jobs - you may ask yourself WHY! Well just like every college student we have bills, rent, and loans to pay off plus I am saving up for a study aboard trip. Everyone has different goals behind why we spend either hours on the golf course, in the office, or carrying heavy trays around a restaurant. Whether it's a job or a career, it's important to always put your best effort forward. You never know among these countless "jobs" who you may meet and make a connection with.
A career is an area of work where one choses to concentrate their skills and information gained in college. Individuals build a career based upon the various jobs held. So I proposed a question to a few readers on what they work for? Since about high school most people have held jobs for various reasons. These reasons can be based upon earning money, gaining experience, learning, passion, networking, etc. Below are some responses on the reason why people work? Thanks for your input!
» There was a time I worked just for the money to reach another goal. As you mature (note I didn't say age) you work for very different reasons. I can now say I work because I enjoy what I do. The people that benefit because I go to work every day fuel my fire. When W-O-R-K is not a four-letter word in your vocabulary I consider you a success no matter what your paycheck may say. - 48 years old
» My goal behind working is simply to always find joy in whatever it is I am doing. Over the years I've realized that I feel most like myself when I am interacting with others and meeting new people as often as I can. My career at this point allows for those frequent interactions and I feel so blessed for for that very reason. I'm also very lucky, because I have a mother who raised me with the mindset to always strive towards a career that I love. She has served as a constant reminder that money isn't everything and in the end it's all about the relationships we've built and the memories we've made. - 20 years old
» The reason I work is to see the world. While I look around and see most of my friends saving money to buy that new car or moving from well tequila to top shelf at the bar, I find myself saving to provide opportunities to broaden my horizons and world perspective into the many other cultures, lifestyles, and natural wonders found on this planet. - 23 years old
» Right now my main reason for working is to pay for school and put gas in my car. I don't love where I work, but I do love the people that I work with. - 21 years old
» If you enjoy what you do, you'll never work another day in your life.
» To be independent - I am able to pay for school without putting a burden on my family. I take more pride in what I own because I know that I work hard for what I earn. And to be able to take road trips to visit friends that live far away!

Although this summer money is my motive behind working so much, remember that happiness isn't money. I have chosen to find happiness in the jobs and places I am. Of course some days are difficult but at the end of the day, I have a roof over my head, food on my plate, and people in my life who continue to make me laugh. That's happiness in itself. So if you find yourself in a rut with a job you don't enjoy, keep your chin held high and use this time to network and build a career. #JobOrCareer
