My favorite moments of winter break is the time you have to think, catch up with old friends, and step away from technology. During my time at home for the holidays I was helping my grandma prepare for Christmas dinner. We were discussing what dishes we wanted to make and got on the topic of how to prepare the potatoes this year (potatoes are a very important food group in my family). We tossed around a few ideas and recipes my grandma had although when scalloped potatoes was brought up she realized she didn't have a recipe. I simply stated 'Oh, I can Google it'. And my grandma blurted out, 'What in the world is this Google? Everyone says I'll Google this or Google that'! I couldn't help but smile at the sincere look of confusion my grandma had on her face. I began to explain the concept of Google and than realize how much Google has affected the lives of Millennials.
I guarantee the average person uses Google at least once everyday. Google has been engraved as a part of our everyday lives. Typing in an keyword on Google can provide us with an answer in about 0.37 seconds giving us instant gratification. But what have we lost since the Internet and the amazing Google. Google was introduced on September 4th of 1998, although being only 5 years old it's hard to remember exactly what life was like but I think I have a pretty good idea.

People actually interacted with one another.
The next time you are in a room full of people, look around and count how many people have their noses stuck in a phone, most likely it will be half of the room. I am guilty of this sometimes but am becoming more conscious of the right timing to check your phone and surf the web. It's the generation of booming technology and constant connection only among the web.
In my grandma's missing recipe incident, when Google wasn't around, she would typically call up a few friends asking around for a recipe or head to the nearest library to search cook books. By the time my grandma found a recipe she would have interacted with possibly over half a dozen people versus the only interaction with the Google search bar.
The use of Google has hindered our memory skills. Since the answers to almost anything lie at our fingertips, it becomes easier to utilize information for the time being and than forget it. Before Google, our mind was forced to remember certain recipes for example or resources to save ourselves times from setting out to search for the answer again.
Before Google the smell of books and magazines would leave their mark on your fingertips. Newspaper clippings would fill my notebook as references and news worthy information. Now it's a matter of Googling news articles and bookmarking them onto the Internet browser. Research papers are written in the comfort of your own home through the Google search engine while encyclopedias and dictionaries lie full of dust on the library shelves. It's a digital world full of 'Google it' lingo that speaks to the minds of Millennials who never knew the life before Google.
For better or for worse? With Google the world is a little less mysterious. The answer behind one click has lost the pleasure of exploration and the discovery of the unknown. Humans learn so much through interaction and the faith in others lead the way to answers. Although Google has created opportunities to acquire knowledge faster and travel by connecting with people and information around the world easier than ever. #LifeBeforeGoogle
