If you were to have asked me two years ago if I was happy, I would have probably smiled and nodded my head in agreement. But in reality deep down I didn't feel like I had a destination point ahead or a light to guide me where I was supposed to go. I felt lost. I kept searching for the path that was meant for me and got caught up in living in the future rather than where I was at that moment. I spaced out and never focused on what was lying right in front of me. This waiting for a change to happen in my life lead me to missed opportunities and chances to learn from others and grow as an individual. Change can be scary but that first step towards making that change is just the beginning of a life full of risk taking moments that will begin to define who you are and where you supposed to be. I am here to tell you to make the change today.
My lifestyle changed upon moving to Grand Rapids and I couldn't be happier with my decision. I was forced to live on my own, find things I love, and most importantly meet new people. I spent the first semester reaching out to different clubs and organizations trying to see where I felt I belonged. It was hard -- yes I did cry some nights and I could have ran home the next day but I refused to cave. This is strength and will power I never knew I had in myself until the moment I threw myself out there, if I fell I always found the courage to pick myself up and try again. Through this process I have learned to listen to my heart when making decisions and constantly live in the moment. It's the moments of change and new situations that flourish moments of pure energy to make a change in order to make yourself happy. Now I find myself loving life more than ever and never waste a minute without a smile.
National Suicide Prevention Week is about sharing your story and bringing yourself to the surface. Everyone has been through their ups and downs of life and I find it important to understand everyone's story. The purpose of providing awareness for depression and mental health is to know that hope is real. Everyone has a story to live but no one else can play your part. We are all unique -- different thoughts, feelings, talents, weakness, and strengths and what we have to offer to the world no one else has. Take this week to share stories of people, family, friends, stories of hard times and good times, and stories of dreams of a better tomorrow. Help build a community of where you feel loved and welcomed and realize we are only humans, humans who make mistakes and learn we are no different from anyone else. And remember the story is yours and no one else can play your part.
No one else can play my part because there is no other person in the world with my exact combination of compassion, determination, strength, and stubbornness. #NoOneElse14
