As I've been told before I am not your typical college student, I ponder on thoughts, make up analogies, craft on my days off and yes, do puzzles. My roommate and I completed a puzzle last month and the process of finding the right piece and the right spot made me realize the activity of creating a puzzle is similar to the idea of creating a life. So naturally I decided to write about it.
A New Day brings a New Piece
Each day you wake up in the morning you are presented with a series of choices and decisions to make with your life. The choices and steps you take in one day alone begin to shape a new piece to your puzzle of life. Our puzzle is ever changing and some parts don't even exist yet, the beauty of life is we get to create a puzzle masterpiece to look anyway we want. Of course there are times when pieces might fall into place that are simply out of your control but it's only the beginning and there is a still a plethora of empty spaces waiting to be filled with adventures, new jobs, or people.
The people you encounter are those who help fill in the missing pieces. You may find yourself connecting with certain people more than others this is because they offer the piece that is needed to complete a portion of our life. All the puzzle pieces may look the same in a pile on the table but its the slight differences that makes a person unique and fit differently with someone else.

Step One: Framing
Once the edge pieces are found and the framing of the puzzle is complete the basic beginning step is behind us. As you notice in the image above of my roommate Daria, we began the puzzle with the concept of finding the easy one-sided flat pieces and establish a frame to work off of. I relate this framing of the puzzle to childhood. A majority of us don't make many major decisions when attending elementary, middle and high school. These are the years where students just follow the norm and complete a routine. But once the outer frame is set for the basic layout of the puzzle, the challenge begins to fill in the empty spaces without that support of the one-sided flat piece as a guideline to which piece or step to take next.
Step Two: Wrong Pieces
Looking at a mess of sky blue puzzle pieces is the most challenging part in the completion of the puzzle - a time when shoving pieces into spaces that don't fit seems like the most liable option. As humans of nature, we naturally gravitate towards things that interest us, therefore we grab a piece that slightly grabs our attention and try to make it fit in the endless row of empty spaces. In life, we are more than likely going to try and force some wrong pieces into empty spaces. We all have a unique place to fit in the world and the journey of putting the pieces together may seem like a never ending process but learn to enjoy the search for the right pieces and build your masterpiece.
When you feel like your puzzle is put together the wrong way, remember that the wrong way may often be the right track. It's actually wonderful to be wrong sometimes and understand the things that need to be right in your life. We may never know where we fit until we try. It may be painful but it's always to your advantage when the truth is unveiled. #LifeIsAPuzzle
